Capillaria sp. in a domiciliate cat in the city of Teresina-PI, Brazil

Abstract

Introduction: t Capillaria is a genus of nematodes that encompasses many species of importance veterinary. Capillaria plica and C. feliscatiare the main species that parasitize the urinary system of felines. The objective of this study was to report a case of Capillariasis in a domestic cat served at a veterinary clinic in the city of Teresina/PI. Case report: The animal was a 12-year-old castrated male who arrived at the clinic with apathy, adipsia, dysuria, and vomiting. On physical examination, abdominal palpation revealed distension of the urinary bladder. A cystocentesis was requested to be performed, as well as urinalysis and urinary sedimentation, where it was possible to observe the presence of structures compatible with Capillaria sp. eggs. The patient's urinalysis also revealed hematuria. Due to dysuria and mild dehydration, the animal was under observation at the clinic, and a protocol with analgesic and fluid therapy was instituted, and treatment with fenbendazole was prescribed. Final considerations: It is concluded that domiciled cats can also be infected by Capillaria sp., with urinary sediment examination being an adequate tool for the early diagnosis of feline capillariosis.
