The perception of nursing students regarding the prone position in patients with COVID-19

Objective: to understand the perception of nursing students considering the purpose, complications, and care of the health team regarding the prone position of patients with COVID-19. Method: a descriptive-exploratory and qualitative survey was carried out with 13 students from a private university center in Paraná. Data were collected between September and October 2022 from a semi-structured questionnaire submitted to thematic content analysis. Results: from the statements, the thematic category emerged: understanding of nursing students regarding the purpose, care, and complications of the prone position in patients with COVID-19. According to the interviewees, pronation improves oxygenation/expansion of the lung. Care focused on synchronizing the health team, checking vital signs, oxygenation, connecting medical devices, and using protective skin patches. Pressure injuries were the main complications reported. Conclusion: students understand the purpose of the prone position and recognize routine care and its main complications.
