Abstract

This article analyzes the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as a strategy for mitigating hydrological risks and enhancing socio-environmental conditions in urban informal settlements. Based on the context of Fortaleza, characterized by uneven urban growth and high socio-environmental vulnerability, the study adopts a qualitative and exploratory approach grounded in the analysis of secondary data and a literature review. Experiences of NbS implementation in informal settlements in the Global South are examined, with emphasis on sustainable drainage solutions, environmental restoration, and community participation. The results indicate that interventions such as rain gardens, permeable areas, and bioswales contribute to flood reduction, improvement of the urban microclimate, and the expansion of social benefits. The study concludes that NbS represent a relevant component of resilient urban planning, particularly when integrated with public policies and participatory governance processes.
