Actions in contexts of animal and object hoarding in Brazil

Abstract

Objective: to describe the actions implemented in Brazil related to contexts of animal and object hoarding, highlighting the relevance of this issue as a public health challenge and the need for multisectoral and multidisciplinary approaches. Methods: This is a descriptive study conducted from June 2023 to February 2024, covering the 27 Federative Units (states) of Brazil. Primary data were collected through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire, developed based on technical visits to Brazilian municipalities with successful experiences in addressing hoarding behavior. Results: A total of 2,018 responses were recorded, with participation from 25 Federative Units, excluding Piauí and Rondônia. Actions addressing hoarding contexts were identified in 430 municipalities across 21 Federative Units. The main sectors involved in these actions were Health Surveillance (84.5%) and Social Assistance Reference Centers (52.8%), demonstrating strong intersectoral engagement. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of intersectoral coordination in addressing hoarding contexts, particularly at the local level, through the integration of different sectors. It also emphasizes the need for continuous training of the professionals involved, as well as the importance of increasing the visibility of this issue both within public health and among the general population.
