Objective: the present study aimed to evaluate the DMFT index and its association with sociodemographic factors, duration of incarceration, and use of psychoactive substances among incarcerated individuals. Methods: this was a quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive study conducted with incarcerated individuals in a prison unit located in the southernmost region of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire and clinical examination to assess the DMFT index. Statistical analyses included Pearson’s chi-square test and Spearman’s correlation, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: a total of 270 individuals were evaluated, with a mean age of 31 years. A high prevalence of psychoactive
substance use was observed (83.7%), particularly marijuana (65.9%), tobacco (59.3%), and alcohol (58.9%). The mean DMFT index was 5.14, classified as low. Crack use showed a significant association with worse DMFT levels (p = 0.013). Conclusion: incarcerated individuals present a high prevalence of psychoactive substance use and a significant demand for dental care, despite predominantly low DMFT levels. Crack use stood out as a factor associated
with poorer oral health conditions. These findings highlight the need for integrated strategies for oral health promotion, prevention, and care within the prison system.
