Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the knowledge of sports practitioners regarding the signs and symptoms of acute cardiovascular events, as well as the actions adopted when faced with situations suggestive of these manifestations. Methods: this was an observational, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted among 263 sports practitioners aged 18 - 60 years. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using
Jamovi software (version 2.3). Results: the sample was predominantly composed of young adults, females, and resistance training practitioners. Most participants recognized classic signs and symptoms of cardiovascular events, particularly chest pain (91.3%), dyspnea (65.4%), and dizziness/syncope (55.1%). However, less typical manifestations were less frequently identified. In addition, a high proportion of participants reported continuing physical
activity despite experiencing symptoms suggestive of cardiovascular events, along with a low tendency to seek professional medical assistance. Conclusion: although sports practitioners demonstrated good recognition of classic cardiovascular signs and symptoms, a discrepancy was observed between this knowledge and the adoption of appropriate actions in situations suggestive of acute cardiovascular events. Furthermore, low adherence to pre-participation cardiovascular evaluation was identified. These findings underscore the need for educational strategies that aim to enhance cardiovascular health literacy and promote safer behaviors during sports practice.
