Este estudo objetiva compreender o processo de aprendizagem gerencial realizado por profissionais sem formação em gestão, contemplando a identificação de fatores limitantes e facilitadores e identificando as competências desenvolvidas pelos entrevistados neste processo de aprendizagem. A pesquisa de cunho qualitativo ocorreu por meio da aplicação de entrevistas com profissionais de saúde que atuam como gerentes em unidades de saúde da família na cidade de João Pessoa/PB. Os relatos resultam reflexões acerca da influência de valores familiares, do seu controle emocional, do uso de análise reflexiva para as tomadas de decisões, do desconforto da não utilização de sua formação no processo de gerenciamento e da insegurança na instabilidade do cargo. Concluímos que a falta de preparo para assumir cargos gerenciais conduz os entrevistados a aprenderem, socialmente, por meio de troca de experiência e de práticas que proporcionaram vivenciar melhor situações peculiares do trabalho.
