INFLATION AND UNEMPLOYMENT IN BRAZIL IN THE LAST 20 YEARS (2002-2022)

This work aims to conduct a summary of the history of inflation in Brazil from 1984 to 2022, exalting the main causes of crises and the impacts generated in the Brazilian economy. The guiding question is to try to assess whether it is possible to establish some relationship between inflation and unemployment for twenty years, starting from 2002 and ending in 2022. To be able to make this connection, it was proposed to use the analysis model known as the Phillips curve, in addition to using the Pearson correlation coefficient in an attempt to correlate the variables of inflation and unemployment in Brazil. The variables used to calculate the curve are the rates of inflation and unemployment (unemployment), provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) through the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continua). The results observed for Brazil showed that the application of the Phillips curve cannot be established if the short and long-term periods are considered; only the values observed for the medium-term were able to provide data that attest to some relationship between inflation and unemployment.
