Software development is a challenging and constantly changing activity. Currently, software development projects involve distributed teams (Distributed Software Development - DSD). Such projects face communication and coordination challenges, which have been extensively investigated in the literature. However, there has not yet been a clear understanding of the specific challenges and practices for different team arrangement types in DDS projects. Therefore, a PRISMA-based Scoping Literature Review (ScR) was conducted to identify the challenges, practices, and different virtual team arrangements in SDR in 26 studies. Challenges and practices were identified in five dimensions (social interactions; processes, events, and collaboration mechanisms; distances and differences; human aspects; and organisational aspects) that positively or negatively influence communication and coordination in DDS projects, as well as four types of team arrangements were identified: colocated, distributed, remote and hybrid. It is concluded that communication promotes coordination in DDS and that tailoring project management approaches is necessary for the success of such projects.
