Abstract

This article analyzes how socio-environmental conflicts in Serra do Curral reveal territorial and institutional disputes among competing development projects, drawing on Political Ecology and Organizational Studies. The study adopts a qualitative approach based on documentary analysis of newspaper articles published between March 2018 and April 2025, using thematic analysis. The corpus comprised 65 articles selected from an initial set of 112 documents; materials with no direct relation to the conflict in Serra do Curral, redundant information, or no identification of institutional actors were excluded. The findings indicate that mining transforms the materiality of the territory and reconfigures social relations and institutional arrangements, while resistance movements mobilize memory, local knowledge, and legal instruments as strategies of contestation. We conclude that these conflicts demonstrate that organizational decisions produce socioecological impacts, requiring the incorporation of socio-environmental justice, inclusive governance, and epistemological plurality into analyses in the field.
