Abstract

Introduction: Neonatal Screening for Cystic Fibrosis is a preventive measure that enables early diagnosis. However, challenges such as the scarce knowledge of professionals on the subject in Brazil highlight the need for continuous efforts to improve educational programs.  Objective: to evaluate the knowledge and practices of primary care health professionals in relation to Cystic Fibrosis (CF), thus trying to contribute to the reduction of late CF diagnoses in the country. Method: This cross-sectional and quantitative study involved 65 healthcare professionals in Fortaleza, Ceará. The questionnaire assessed knowledge about CF in the three domains (knowledge about concepts, diagnosis and conduct in the face of a suspected case), whose validity was evaluated and confirmed. Associations were verified with bivariate tests. Result: of the participants, 38.5% were doctors from the Family Health Strategy, 30.8% pediatricians and 30.8% nurses. The majority were female, with an average age of 39.9 years and an average experience of 10.6 years. 93.8% did not receive specific training on CF. Knowledge was varied and deficient among professionals. Pediatricians had a higher level of knowledge than other professionals. Furthermore, this was a pioneering approach in assessing health professionals' knowledge regarding CF in the Northeast region of Brazil. It was identified that prior knowledge about this disease is still quite deficient and, to a certain extent, may interfere with early diagnosis. The lack of educational programs on CF is evident. Conclusion: identifying gaps in knowledge is fundamental and crucial for early diagnosis of CF.
