Dropout in higher education

Abstract

This bibliometric study investigated the use of innovative tools in undergraduate courses as a way to mitigate the risks of dropout. The research data were extracted from the Web of Science database and processed using the Bibliometrix tool. The results indicate that dropout is influenced by several factors and that innovative devices show potential to mitigate the problem and improve academic performance. On the other hand, the research also points out that the inappropriate use of technology can have the undesirable consequence of superficial learning. It concludes that adapting innovations to teaching, combined with the early detection of at-risk students, is essential to reduce dropout rates and promote academic success.

Adjunct Professor at Federal University of Sao Joao del Rei, Brazil. Ph.D. in Administration (Business, Economics and Markets) and M.Sc. in Accounting and Controllership. Visiting Academic at UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Australia. Current research interests include, environmental economics, accounting, finance, bibliometrics, efficiency of financial systems, banks, credit unions, startups and fintech.
